IPX7 vs IPX5: How to Read Waterproof Ratings Before You Buy an Outdoor Speaker

"Waterproof" is the most abused word in consumer electronics. The honest answer to "can I take this to the pool?" is written in the IP rating — two letters, a couple of digits, and a set of test conditions. Here is how to read it in about three minutes.

What an IP rating actually measures

IP stands for Ingress Protection. The first digit (or the letter X) covers solids like dust and sand; the second digit covers liquids. A rating like IPX7 means solids are not rated (X) and the speaker survived liquid testing at level 7.

What IPX7 does not mean

A few honest limits:

• It is not a depth rating. One metre for 30 minutes is the test. Deeper or longer is outside the spec.
